Mission Statement

Australian Centre for Indigenous History (ACIH)

The Australian Centre for Indigenous History is an initiative of the History Program in the Research School of Social Sciences, and is strongly backed and supported by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb. Its opening also coincides with significant ANU initiatives for Indigenous research, including the establishment of the National Centre for Indigenous Studies.

  • The Australian Centre for Indigenous History will conduct and promote high quality research on the history of Indigenous peoples.
  • Researchers at the Centre will study the history of Australian Indigenous peoples in their own right and in their relations with immigrant and international populations.
  • Trans-national and comparative Indigenous histories are an important research focus.
  • The Centre will encourage the study of Australian Indigenous modes of history - their written, oral, pictorial, material culture, multi-media and performative expression.
  • Australian Indigenous history is understood as central to Australian history in its colonial and national transformations.
  • Australian Indigenous History as studied within the Centre is dynamic, relational and interactive.
  • Centre researchers will present their historical research in a variety of accessible mediums.
