PhD ProgramThe Australian Centre for Indigenous History welcomes graduate students not only from Australia but from around the world. The Centre provides an environment that nourishes innovation and promotes high quality research on the history of Indigenous peoples. Researchers at the Centre study the history of Australian indigenous peoples in their own right and in their relations with immigrant and overseas populations as well as trans-national and comparative indigenous histories. The Centre encourages the study of Australian indigenous modes of history - their written, oral, visual and material culture, multi-media and performative expression. Australian Indigenous History as studied within the Centre is dynamic, relational and interactive. Australian indigenous histories are understood as central to Australian history in its colonial and national transformations. The Centre sits within the History Program of the Research School of Social Sciences. The History Program has for many years been a major centre for research in the social, cultural, and political history of Australia and related societies. All staff and visitors within the History Program have significant international profiles within the historical profession. This rich source of expertise offers a diverse range of specialised supervisors to guide graduate students in their research work. Scholarships and Graduate Student SupportGraduate students within the Centre have access to the wide range of benefits offered to all PhD students within the ANU community through the Graduate School. The Graduate School provides coordination and support services for graduate students and academic staff across the University through its various initiatives such as induction and supervision workshops and, jointly with the Academic Skills and Learning Centre, the Academic and Professional Skills Program.
